ABSTRACT
This study investigated the effect of G. procumbens on cardiac integrity markers; creatine kinase (CRT-Kin) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels of rats during reproductive damage. Twenty-five male Albino rats of weight 120 – 130 g were equally divided into four groups as follows: group 1 were the control rats administered normal rat chow and water, group 2 (reproductive toxicity) were rats administered 100 mg/kg b.w lead acetate, group 3 were the rats treated with 100mg/kg b.w ascorbic acid during reproductive damage, and groups 4 and 5 were rats treated respectively with 100 and 20 mg/kg b.w of G. procumbens during reproductive damage. Rat chow and water was provided to all groups ad libitum, and treatment lasted for 21 days. The CRT-Kin levels of the control rats were 287 U/L and 619 U/L during reproductive damage. The rats with reproductive damage treated with ascorbic acid produced CRT-Kin levels of 261 U/L while treatment with the G. procumbens 1st and 2nd doses were 261 and 277 U/L respectively. The LDH levels of the control rats was 295 U/L and 616 U/L during reproductive damage. The rats with reproductive damage treated with ascorbic acid produced LDH levels of 408 U/L while treatment with the G. procumbens 1st and 2nd doses were 317 and 309 U/L respectively. The results have shown that the administration of G. procumbens forestalled the leakage of creatinine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase into systemic circulation even more significantly than ascorbic acid used as a standard drug.
