ABSTRACT
Birds are highly diverse and conspicuous species of the environmental ecosystem. They role as potential bio-indicators and predicting environmental change. The present study deals with the diversity, abundance and feeding guild of avian species. A total of 81 species of avifauna belonging to 14 orders and 42 families has been recorded in a survey carried out from March 2022 to February 2023 in the Serampore, Jolkol. Maximum number of species belong to the order Passeriformes (33 species) and minimum under orders Gruiformes, Ciconiiformes, Strigiformes (1 species each). Maximum number of species belong to the family Ardeidae (8 species) and minimum under one species belonged to each of the Rallidae, Passeridae, Phalacrocoracidae, Upupidae, Nectariniidae, Procellariidae, Fregatidae, Dicrurus, Leiothrichidae, Dicaeidae, Meropidae, Hirundinidae, Artamidae, Strigidae, Charadriidae, Laniidae, Threskiornithidae, Estrildidae, Jacanidae, Aegithinidae, Coraciidae, Alaudidae, Phylloscopidae families. Among the recorded species 49 (61%) were resident, 20 (25%) species were winter migrant and 6 (7%) species were local migrant.Among the foraging groups, 37 species were insectivore, 16 species were carnivore, 11 species were Omnivore, 10 species were Frugivore, 5 species were Granivore and 2 species were Nectarivore. It is observed that all bird species were least concern. The results of relative diversity (RD) index showed that Ardeidae (RD Index value = 9.87) was the dominant family in the study area. The present check list will provide baseline information for the bird diversity in and around study area. The present study is a preliminary effort to species richness the avifaunal diversity of Serampore, Jolkol and a more extensive systematic study should be carried out to investigate and protect the avifaunal diversity of this study area.
