ABSTRACT
The kinetics of oxidation of chalcones by quinaldinium fluorochromate has been studied in
aqueous acetic acid medium in the presence of perchloric acid. The order of the reaction is found to be
one with respect to oxidant and hydrogen ion. The order with respect to substrate is found to be
fractional. The reaction rates have been determined at different temperatures and the activation
parameters calculated. Electron withdrawing substituents are found to enhance the rate of the reaction
and electron releasing substituents are found to retard the rate of the reaction and the rate data obeys
the Hammett relationship. From the observed kinetic results a probable mechanism has been proposed.
