ABSTRACT
Every day, mining operations grow in Nigeria in search of Mineral resources for increasing national income. The delineated minerals of economic viability are, coal, sandstone, shale, migmatite, granite and undifferentiated schist. Results from temperature measurements of springs, using thermometer, and spectral analysis performed on the aeromagnetic data suggest the occurrence of geothermal anomaly and mineralized zones in Lokoja and environs studied using sheet 247.Temperature measurement was carried out with mercury in glass thermometer before the spectral analysis with Oasis montaj, surfer 8 and matlab software. Igbonla spring water temperature was measured as 54 ºC close to the source of the spring as at the time of measurement. The temperature decreases gradually as the spring flows away from its source. Egeneja warm spring has 43 ºC temperatures close to it source and gradually decreases away from the source. Spectral analysis performed on aeromagnetic data using sheet 247 of study area generally showed the Curie point depth values varying inversely to the geothermal gradient and heat flow values. Curie point depth values ranges from 7.79 to 18.62 km with average of 11.69 km, indicating the depth of the mineralized chamber and geothermal gradient values ranges from 31.15 to 74.54 °C/km with average of 54.57 °C/km and heat flow values ranges from 77.14 to 187.32 mW/m2 with average of 135.52 mW/m2. The south eastern edge hosts the highest values of heat flow and geothermal gradient with corresponding shallowest values of Curie point depth (Fig.1). The result reveals that the depth to basement of the mineralized zones range from (0.47 km – 1.99 km).
