ABSTRACT
This study examined the effect of Telfairia occidentalis on apoptosis in the muscle of streptoxotocin-induced type II diabetic albino rats. 35 male (100-250 mg/kg) were used for the study. The rats were divided into five groups of seven rats each. group one served as the normal control and received 0.5 ml distilled water, Groups 2-5 first took 10 percent fructose for 14 days followed by a one-time intraperetoneal injection of 40 mg/kg body weight streptozotocin. After diabetes induction, Groups 2 rats (diabetic control) were given 0.5 ml distilled water, group 3 and 4 rats received 200 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg body weight Telfairia occidentalis respectively, while group 5 rats were treated with 300 mg/kg body weight of metformin. the treatment period lasted for 28 days, after which the animals were sacrificed under chloroform anesthesia and the muscle was harvested, centrifuged and homogenized for assay of apoptotic markers. The results obtained respectively showed significant increases in Capase-3, Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha, Interleukin-1 beta, cycloxygenase-2 and malondialdehyde when compared with the normal control, while all the apoptotic markers assayed for were significantly reduced in the 200 mg/kg, 300 mg/kg body weight Telfairia occidentalis treated as well as the metformin treated groups except in interleukin-1 beta where there was no significant effect in 200 mg/kg body weight and a significant decrease in 300 mg/kg body weight. based on these results, it can be suggested that the extract of Telfairia occidentalis was capable of reducing apoptotic markers in the muscle of streptozotocin induced rats.
