ABSTRACT
Phytodiversity refers to the variety and variability of plants in a given ecosystem. The loss of plant biodiversity in Nigeria is intensifying distressingly, which happened to be prominent in protected and un-conserved areas threatened by the confrontational effect of anthropogenic activities. The diversity of plants in Nigerian Defence Academy Biological Garden (NDABG) was studied. Shannon-Weiner and Simpson diversity indices were applied to investigate taxonomic diversity and Importance Value Index (IVI) to reveal floristic composition. Conservation status of tree plants was assessed using the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red list Version 2022-1. A total of 38 tree species belonging to 19 families were identified. The family fabaceae had the highest distribution of trees with 47.37 %. Datarium macroparpum had the highest IVI value of 8.26. Shannon-Weiner and Simpson indices had respective values of 3.48 and 0.97. Moreover, IUCN data on the global conservation status of identified trees revealed that 71 % were “least concern”, 11 % “vulnerable” and 10 % “endangered”, 5 % near threatened and 3 % data deficient species. The diversity indices showed that, NDABG is rich and the dominance of stands with small diameter shows good regeneration status.
