ABSTRACT
The purpose of this paper is to discus key competences of knowledge workers on the example of software engineers (developers). First part presents an overview of the literature on both the desired competences of programmers and methods of their development. Second section presents results of quantitative research based on on-line survey conducted among IT professionals and academic teachers. Last part contains conclusions and recommendations for formal education.
