ABSTRACT
A homologous series of 4-(4’-n-alkoxy-3’-methoxy cinnamoyloxy) phenyl azo-3’’-4’’-dimethyl benzene (A1– A12) has been synthesized and characterized. The primary objective of this study was to explore the correlation between molecular structure and mesomorphic behavior. All synthesized compounds, except for the shorter chain homologues (A1, A2 & A3), exhibited a smectic mesophase upon cooling. The thermal transition temprature were determined using polarizing optical microscope, which yielded consistent results. The molecular structures of the compounds were confirmed through spectroscopic techniques, including ¹H NMR, 13C NMR, FTIR, and mass spectrometry. This research provides valuable insights into the design and synthesis of novel liquid crystalline materials with tailored properties for potential applications in various fields, such as display technologies and optoelectronic devices.
